Now that we’re into May in the 2016 season, it might be interesting to look back to the Blue Jays’ American League East division leading team and compare their offence with previous Jays teams – especially those that won the division in 1985, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1993.
The 2015 team recorded a total of 891 runs, which compared to all previous teams in Jays’ franchise history puts the 2015 team at second, behind the 2003 team which scored 894 runs. Among previous division winners the 1993 team comes in next at 847 runs (5th overall among Jays teams from 1977-2015), followed by the 1992 Jays at 780 runs (13th), then the 1985 Jays with 759 runs (19th), the 1989 Jays at 731 runs (24th) and finally the 1991 Jays at 684 runs (30th).
As was often pointed out about the 2015 Jays, they far outscored their opponents in the American League, as the graph below shows that their total of 891 was well over 100 runs more than second place East finishers the New York Yankees. Among American League East teams the Jays finished first in Doubles, Home Runs and Walks, though they were quite far behind the Red Sox and Rays in terms of hitting triples.
The filter on the graph below allows you to choose any year since the inception of the Jays in 1977 to compare how many runs each American League team. As well, within each year you can choose which division you want to dive into for more information on the number of Home Runs, Doubles, Triples and Walks recorded by each team.
